MARGAO: The Goa Shipyard Employees Union has urged South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar to take up with the Centre to get more orders for the Goa Shipyard from the Navy and Coast Guard.
The Union has also appealed to the MP to ensure that local youth receive priority in recruitments in the Goa Shipyard.
A delegation of the Employees Union led by President Kishor Shet called on the MP during his weekly visit to the district collectorate, South on Tuesday.
In the memorandum, the union impressed upon the MP to get more orders for Goa Shipyard from the Navy and Coast Guard saying the shipyard employs around 1600 workforces and involved the livelihood of around 6500 persons.
“For over four decades now GSL has designed, built and commissioned a wide range of sophisticated vessels for varied applications in the defence and commercial sectors with special expertise in building modern patrol vessels of steel and aluminum hull structure,” Shet said.
The Union also made a plea to the MP to take up with the Centre to work out a scheme to appoint the next of kin against the retired/expired employees since most of the employees are near to superannuation.
“GSL is not having a provision to give priority in recruitments to the local people. In the absence of such a provision, most of the deserving unemployed Goans remain away or look out for job outside the state. Also campus interviews in Colleges across Goa are not been held to search for the deserving talent”, the memorandum stated.
