VASCO: Goa Trade Unions Confederation (GTUC) has demanded that the government take labour union leaders into confidence and implement labour laws to protect the interest of the workers and labourers. At a media briefing held on Monday, GTUC leaders complained about how industries located across Goa are hiring employees and labour from other states.
GTUC leader Ajit Singh Rane alleged that 80 per cent of the labour force working at the industrial estates in Goa are non Goans, which he claimed is an injustice to the local population and sons of the soil.
“The Labour law states that around 70 to 80 percent of work force needs to be locals and that the remaining can be from outside Goa but the prevailing situation is exactly the opposite,” said Rane.
Criticising the government, Rane accused the authorities of acting like secretaries of industrial tycoons instead of addressing the problems faced by labour workers.
“There is a need to regularise the contracts of temporary workers and employees as well clamping down on all unlawful practices which are violations of labour rights. Industries and companies in Goa should give recognition to the workers union, which work in the interest of the employees, added Rane.
Meanwhile, Rane stated that the International Labour Day will be celebrated by them at Cortalim which will be based on the theme – ‘Save our people, we the people should assert and save the sovereignty”. Around 900 labours, workers are expected for the public rally, which will be followed by public meeting at Cortalim.
