MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club downed Verna Sports Club 2-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals of all-Goa SWC Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Social Welfare Club of Zaino at Zaino ground, Velim, Wednesday. Areal led 2-0 at half time.
Areal held the upper hand in both sessions and never allowed their opponents to settle down. They led in the early moments when Verna defender Stanley, in trying to avert the danger put the ball into his own goal. A couple of opportunities were squandered by their forwards.
Verna tried their best but failed to get past the rival strong rearguard. Areal doubled the lead when Raymond Fernandes bulged the net.
Crossing over, Areal continued to dictate terms but could not score due to the inept shooting.
Verna had a couple of scoring chances but failed to beat the rival goalkeeper.
