Dessai completed his BE in mechanical engineering at Goa Engineering College and his post-graduation at IIT Chennai, where he secured 94 percent. He comes from a middle-class family; his father Rauji Dessai is a retired government employee and his mother is housewife. He is probably the first Goan to reach this level. Indian Institute of Science had picked him to be a part of the institution and carry out his further research there, but he preferred IIT Mumbai.
