Man held for smuggling gold

VASCO: The air intelligence unit seized 539 grams of gold worth Rs 14.6 lakh that was being smuggled by a Mumbai native through the Dabolim airport on Saturday. The smuggler Mote Sham Shakeel Ahmed (40) travelled to Goa by an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah.

Ahmed had devised a unique method to smuggle the gold, but still could not outsmart the vigilant officials. They detained him on suspicion and searched his baggage, where they found the gold.
“The gold was in a moulded form. The accused had made his trolley-bag wheels with gold. Similarly, the electronic coffee mug, screws and star-studded caps of the trolley were of gold. Even a Nivea cream cover was made of gold,” informed a customs official.
Custom officials placed Ahmed under arrest and are further investigating the case.
