earns ₹4.8 lakh from multiple income sources despite dropping out of his engineering degree and never attending an IIT.
Lavanya Jain shared screenshots of bank transaction alerts on X, showing two credits—one of ₹3.74 lakh and another of ₹1.12 lakh—adding up to approximately ₹4.8 lakh. He said the post was intended to challenge the notion that an IIT degree is essential for financial success.
Jain revealed that he left his BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering during the final semester, describing the decision as one of the best choices of his life.
“I’m not even from an IIT. In fact, I dropped out from my BTech in my final semester,” he wrote, adding that he now earns more than the highest placement package ever offered at his college.
According to Jain, he currently earns over $100,000 annually while working part-time as a contractor in growth and go-to-market (GTM) roles. He has previously worked with startups including Runable, Kairos Computer and Fold.
Beyond his primary income, Jain claimed to have built five passive income streams, saying his main earnings comfortably cover all his expenses.
“I have five sources of passive income, and my main income covers everything I spend on myself,” he wrote.
While acknowledging that graduating from an IIT offers networking opportunities and recognition, Jain argued that long-term career growth depends more on skills and execution than on a prestigious college tag.
“This is not a flex. Just a subtle reminder that IIT is just a tag,” he wrote, adding that he now manages professionals who graduated from IITs.
His post has since gone viral, triggering discussions online about whether elite educational institutions remain the biggest factor in career success or whether practical skills, entrepreneurship and alternative career paths now play a greater role in shaping professional achievements.
