Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor scripted history on Monday by securing his party’s first-ever electoral victory, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the high-profile Bankipur Assembly bypoll and ending its uninterrupted 35-year dominance in one of Bihar’s strongest saffron bastions.
Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 18,953 votes. He secured 63,203 votes, while Sinha finished with 44,250 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta ended a distant third with 14,085 votes.

Having established an early lead after counting began, Kishor steadily widened the gap over the BJP candidate. By the 15th round of counting, his victory appeared all but certain, and he maintained his advantage through the remaining rounds.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Kishor, who transitioned from being one of India’s most sought-after political strategists to an active politician by launching the Jan Suraaj Party.
The result also underlined the effectiveness of Kishor’s early campaign strategy. Nearly two months before the BJP and the RJD formally intensified their campaigns, he had already begun holding public meetings, conducting extensive door-to-door outreach and building a booth-level organisational network across the constituency.
Throughout the campaign, Kishor focused on issues such as employment, education and governance, while also appealing strongly to first-time and Gen Z voters. He repeatedly raised the Bhojpur encounter in which Bharat Tiwari was killed and projected the bypoll as a referendum on the Samrat Choudhary-led government in Bihar.
Despite the BJP treating the election as a prestige battle by deploying around 40 star campaigners and thousands of party workers, the party failed to retain the constituency it had held for more than three decades.
Speaking after his victory became certain, Kishor thanked the voters of Bankipur and promised to honour the trust they had placed in him.
“Our first priority after this victory is to honour the blessings and trust that the people of Bankipur have placed in us. We will do everything we can to improve Bankipur. You will begin to see those changes over the next two to three months,” he said.
While acknowledging that change would not happen overnight, Kishor assured residents that visible improvements would begin to emerge within months.
The Jan Suraaj chief also claimed that the verdict carried a larger political message for the BJP leadership. He urged the party to appoint a capable and honest Chief Minister for Bihar, saying the state’s development should remain the foremost priority irrespective of political differences.
Reacting to the result, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi congratulated Kishor and said the party would conduct a detailed review to understand the reasons behind the defeat. He maintained that the BJP remained committed to the development of Bankipur despite the electoral setback.
State minister Vijay Kumar Sinha echoed the sentiment, saying the BJP respected the people’s mandate and would introspect rather than question the electoral process. He reiterated the party’s faith in democratic institutions and said it would carefully analyse the result to identify shortcomings and improve its performance in future elections.
For Prashant Kishor, the victory represents more than just winning an Assembly seat. It marks the arrival of Jan Suraaj as a political force in Bihar and provides the former election strategist with his first electoral mandate as he seeks to reshape the state’s political landscape.
