The education world is moving towards digital transformation due to the lockdown on account of the COVID–19 pandemic. Today, most of the children are engaged on the smart phones for hours. Online learning provides an opportunity for the parents to ensure that their children use the smart phones for productive online learning purposes. As physical distancing continues digital connect will help our children to be socially active in a productive way.
Online learning provides an opportunity to the parents to see how a teacher is teaching. Digital learning is not all about forwarding notes on WhatsApp to the students and expecting them to memorise. St Don Bosco said, “Education is a subject matter of the heart”. It is important that the teachers learn how to leave a human touch to their online teaching. The teachers must keep the spirit alive and move on with learning new methodologies as learning never ends. There are schools in Tamil Nadu which are Microsoft Teams accredited and use the Microsoft Teams App to help their students learn online.
.On April 5, the Registrar of the Goa University issued a notification to the teaching faculty of Goa University and its affiliated colleges to complete the remaining syllabus for the courses in the current semester in the online mode. Only a few colleges in Goa like Don Bosco College of Engineering and Goa Medical College have started using online tools to engage the students through virtual classroom learning.
Most of the colleges in Goa have gone into hibernation during the quarantine. It is nice to know that the Directorate of Education (DoE) and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is conducting a four day online training programme in the State from May 5 involving primary, secondary and higher secondary school teachers and heads through the resource persons from national trusts.
If the schools and colleges in Goa fail to use the digital platform as facilitation mechanism, Goa will lag behind in education and will fail to contribute to the economic and social development of our state and country. Hence, I appeal to the Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant to appoint an educationist by heart who has kept himself abreast of times with the latest developments in the field of education as an Officer on Special Duty who will guide the educational fraternity in Goa and take the future of the future citizens of our state to international standards.
If we as teachers are able to transform the life of a child, after God the most important human being in his life for him will be his teacher. I hope that our teachers in Goa will accept that change is the way of life and be open to the reformatting of the crashed education system hard disk.
