MARGAO: Traditional fishermem from Benaulim have demanded that the Fisheries Department and Coastal police ensure that the fishing ban in Goa is strictly implemented is implemented in letter and spirit.
They also wanted immediate action against trawlers venturing into the sea despite the ban period or against boats fishing into Goan waters from the neighbouring states.
The fishermen pointed out that they have parked all their canoes and other equipment as per the
law and that it is unfair for them to see thers violating the law.
“First of all, this fishing ban period is also maintained so that the fish can grow but when such illegal fishing takes place, these boats scoop out all the fish now and later there is hardly any fish in the sea for us,” added a fishermen.
Furthermore they pointed out that they had received assurances from the government on this matter when the Union Fisheries Minister was visiting Goa last month and that violations are taking place on the first day of the fishing ban.
They suggested that the Fisheries Department and costal police use satellite images or drones to capture the violations and demanded that a deterrent is set now or else there will be no change for the next two months.
