Garbage issue discussed at Cavelossim gram sabha

MARGAO: Garbage management was discussed at length at the Cavelossim gram sabha with villagers asking the panchayat to take stern action against the hotel that is burning its waste next to the Holy Cross School.
As Sarpanch Dionizio Dias informed that the panchayat has already complained about this matter to the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation and even the police and Block Development Officer but no action was forthcoming from any of the agencies. The villagers then asked the sarpanch to levy hefty fines of Rs. 25,000 upon the perpetrator of the offence as mandated by law.
Sarpanch informed the gram sabha that the panchayat has reduced the tax on small guesthouses by 25 per cent for the current year as there was a decline in the number of tourists visiting the village. While appreciating this move the villagers asked the sarpanch to monitor the large scale conversions sought under Section 16B of the Town and Country Planning Act.
The gram sabha reconstituted the Biodiversity Management Committee and appointed Dixon Vaz as the chairman and the Gram Panchayat Development Plan was also discussed and will be finalised at the extraordinary gram sabha to be held on December 19.
The villagers endorsed the panchayat decision to ask for desilting of River Sal even as the sarpanch informed that separate changing and shower rooms will be erected at the beach for men and women besides setting up six arm lamp posts in the village.
