A house, shop and 5 vehicles gutted at Aquem-Baixo

Incident occurred on Saturday morning near Military camp; no casualty reported as building was unoccupied; short-circuit could be the reason for the fire

MARGAO: In a major fire incident, two storey house, one shop and five vehicles gutted at Aquem-Baixo, Navelim resulting in loss of lakhs of rupees, on Saturday. While no casualty has been reported, it was a lucky escape for one senior citizen. 

The incident was reported between 7 and 7.30 in the morning near the Military camp. Upon the call, Fire and Emergency Services, Margao rushed to the site and doused the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be known. The house is owned by S. Rodrigues.

As informed by fire personnel Dhiraj Dessai, four bikes and one car gutted in fire alongwith a shop. The materials kept inside the upholstery shop, basically used for making sofas and other items and several household items were also destroyed in the fire. 

“Two fire tenders were used to douse the fire and property worth lakhs of rupees have been saved,” he added. 

Remedious Rodrigues, brother of the house owner, told reporters that he rushed at the site but was unable to control the fire as the flames were huge. 

“There were materials used for sofa making that were kept inside the shop, all gutted in fire. We don’t know the exact cause of the fire, but it looks like a short-circuit could be the reason,” he informed.

The timely arrival of the personnel of the Margao Fire and Emergency Services prevented a major tragedy.
