MARGAO: In a concerted effort to revitalise local water resources, several community ponds in the village of Chinchinim underwent major desilting and restocking initiatives ten months ago. The endeavour aimed to improve water quality and bolster the area’s fishery resources.
The restoration process began with the removal of accumulated silt from the ponds, increasing their water capacity and enhancing the aquatic environment. This desilting process, undertaken by the Water Resources Department (WRD), paved the way for the introduction of a diverse array of fish species into the rejuvenated pond.

With the support of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) South Goa, various fish species were carefully selected and introduced into the revitalised ponds at Sucaldem-Chinchinim. This strategic restocking initiative was part of a broader plan to ensure sustainable fish populations and support the livelihoods of the local community.
Over the ensuing eight months, the ponds provided an ideal habitat for the fish, as they thrived. The improved water quality and increased nutrient availability resulting from the desilting fostered an environment conducive to their growth and development.
Recently, the community gathered to harvest the fish, and the results exceeded expectations. A substantial and healthy catch was reported, proving that their pond restoration and fish restocking efforts were successful.
“This bountiful harvest not only promises economic benefits for the local community but also asserts the positive impact of environmental stewardship and sustainable resource management. The project stands as a shining example of how collaborative efforts between local authorities, agricultural institutions, and the community can yield tangible results in revitalising natural resources and promoting ecological and economic sustainability,” said local panch member Frank Viegas who was a key figure in this project.
