MARGAO: In response to the objection raised by members of cooperative societies in Goa against the order issued by Goa Electricity Department to stop collecting bills from February 1, the Chief Electrical Engineer (CEE) has issued a press note stating that the department has implemented the Bharat Bill Payment System which is an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and National Payment Corporation of India.
Under this system consumers can pay their bills through various modes, besides physical payment. The CEE stated that the letter for implementation of BBPS was given to Thane Janta Sahakari Bank with a direction to include all co-operative societies and banks presently collecting power bills into BBPS network in November 2018 with free implementation cost and by paying the same commission charges as presently paid by the department.
He informed that out of 395 banks/coop societies collecting power bills, around 37 nationalised banks with their branches and 48 co-operative societies along with their branches have already got enrolled with BBPS, totalling more than 500 collection points as of now.
