After being buried in their books for
countless nights and anticipating the dreaded question paper, Goan students
will finally be answering entrance exams for various courses in state. The Goa
Common Entrance Test (GCET) offers admissions to MBBS and BDS courses at Goa’s
Medical and Dental Colleges. The number of MBBS seats at Goa Medical College is
approximately 150 seats and the number of seats at the Dental College is
slotted at 40. The test was held on May 5 and 6, 2015 in various notified
centers, with Physics and Chemistry being held on May 5 and Mathematics and
Biology being held on May 6. The results for the same will be declared on May
13, 2015. Candidates applying for GCET must be 17 years of age before December
31 of the year of admission. For medicine and dentistry courses, the minimum
score in a GCET Exam should be 50 percent (40 percent for SC/ST/OBC and for
applicants belonging to PH category.)
However, it is very difficult to succeed at
a GCET exam. Many students who have failed to succeed in the previous GCET in
2014 have reapplied this year. Fatima Vaz from the Goa College of Pharmacy who
has recently answered the GCET says, “I prepared for this exam from different
reference books, notes and text books. What scares me the most is the niggling
doubt of whether what I have studied is enough and what type of questions might
be thrown at me. Physics is tough, so preparing for it was stressful and in
addition to my other woes, the time allotted is not sufficient so that really
scares me too.”

Another stressful entrance exam is the
Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) which is a
university level exam, the passing of which is essential to get into BITS
Pilani, one of the best Universities in India. BITSAT will be an online test
conducted from May 14 to 29, 2015. In order to facilitate a large number of
students all over India to participate in this test, apart from Pilani, Goa and
Hyderabad campuses of BITS (where it is expected that a large number of
students will take the test), the Institute is also planning to offer the tests
at dedicated test centers in several cities. BITSAT-2015 will be of total
3-hour duration. The test consists of four parts: Part I includes Physics, Part
II includes Chemistry, Part III includes (a) English Proficiency and (b)
Logical Reasoning and Part IV includes Mathematics or Biology.
Candidates applying for BITSAT must have
completed 10+2 from a recognized board in the country. Candidates must secure
minimum 75 percent in aggregate in the subjects of Physics, Mathematics and
Chemistry. They must secure 60 percent in each subject separately. Candidates
must be proficient in English. Candidates who have passed their 10+2 in 2013 or
earlier are not eligible.
Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a
national exam which offers admission to Law courses in National Law
Universities. Application forms were
available from January 1 to April 14, 2015. The exam will be held on May 10,
2015, with results being declared on May 20, 2015. Candidates applying for CLAT
must have passed in class 12 from a recognised board and should score an
aggregate of 45 percent and 40 percent in case of reserved category.

any of these tests, this is definitely a stressful time. Rest assured that
these tests are just another step in a long and promising career, and once on
the other side of it, it seems like all the worry was over nothing.
