Low-key five day Ganesh celebration at Adpoi

PONDA: It was a low-key five day Ganesh celebration in Adpoi by the 17 families, due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. The idols were immersed in Zuari river in a simple manner and following social distancing norms.

Locals added that they missed the presence of Union Minister Shripad Naik during the celebration and immersion this year. The North Goa MP is currently receiving treatment for COVID-19 at a hospital. However, Shripad’s son Sidhesh Naik joined the celebrations and took part in the idol immersion. 

Local panch member Mashal Adpoikar said this year due to the COVID pandemic, the devotees missed the traditional activity that the village is famous for. 

Held on the fifth day, the celebrations which are organized jointly by the seventeen families of the village see thousands throng Adpoi to see the float parade. 

Each family, which has about 100-150 members, makes floats based on mytholigicla concepts,  with Ganesh idols kept at the centre of the procession before the immersion. Devotees dance to the tunes of drums and chanting slogans Ganpati Bappa Morya, Jay Vithal Jay Vithal, etc.

Shripad Naik is also amongst one of these families. Last year, Naik had said that he wants to mak the unique Ganesh Visarjan ceremony at Adpoi a tourist attraction and that this proposal had been sent to the government.
