PANJIM: Congress on Thursday petitioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention for the immediate resumption of iron ore mining activities in the State.
“We would like to state that if mining activity does not resume immediately after the monsoon, the economy would be in real shambles,” Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar said in his petition.
Congress said they have been always supportive towards a correct and appropriate initiative, whether legislative or judicial within the mandate of Supreme Court order and MMRD Act to ensure that mining dependents get relief.
“It may be noted that the BJP-led State government has been a complete failure which is running without Chief Minister for more than 100 days,” he said. “The government led by Manohar Parrikar is only giving false hopes to the people of Goa without providing any relief despite having Central and State governments, since closure of mining seven years back (2012),” Chodankar added.
“Although, judgment was delivered by the Supreme Court on February 7, 2018, there are no signs of any revival of mining industry in Goa by the State government,” Congress leader stated.
The Congress leader pointed out that the mining companies have already started retrenching staff and hundreds of mining dependents are agitating all over Goa.
