PANJIM: Following the Central government’s new rules, the State Transport Department has done away with the rule of having a badge compulsory for light commercial vehicle drivers.
A circular issued by Transport Director Nikhil Desai says, “It is hereby informed to general public that there is no need for a driver of Motor Cab Maxi Cab LMV to hold an authorisation (taxi badge) to drive transport category vehicles. All members of public are requested to take note and submit the application for grant of permits accordingly.”
The central government in April had done away with the requirement of a commercial licence for driving taxis, three-wheelers.
It had been reported that it is not required for drivers of taxis, autos, e-rickshaws and two-wheelers employed by companies for food deliveries, product deliveries etc to hold a commercial licence. Their private driving licence is now enough for all legal intents and purposes.
Previously, it was required by all transport vehicles to have a commercial licence after the drivers got their private licences. The waiting period for a commercial licence was more than a year, which caused loss of employment opportunities for many.
The Road Transport Ministry issued an advisory to the State governments regarding this policy, clarifying that a commercial driving licence is still compulsory for trucks, buses and other heavy commercial vehicles.
