Stray cattle a menace in Bicholim

Stray animals have been creating havoc in Bicholim City, even as Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) has claimed that the menace would be solved within a month.
Stray cows and cattle have been creating problem to the commuters in the city. The menace is serious, as everyday over 40 stray animals are seen on the roads. During market day, it creates problem to the vegetable vendors and grocery shop owners.
“The problem is very serious and the municipal council has to act upon this and solve the issue,” Naresh Kadkade, a shop owner, told Herald.
“The High Court has also directed that such cattle should not remain on the roads and it is the responsibility of the concerned municipal council to check on this,” added Kadkade.
“BMC has deputed a worker in the market, who is seen running after the animals, especially on the market day, but ultimately they return back to the same spot after some time. All these animals should be tied and the owners should be fined,” said Kadkade.
It may be recalled that during the last council meeting, BMC had resolved to keep the cattle menace under control and had also decided to assign the responsibility to a private agency from Valpoi.
As per the contract, BMC would pay the agency Rs 2 lakh, who take away the stray cattle.
It was also decided to fine the cattle owner Rs 250 per day.
When asked about the council decision and its implementation, the authorities admitted that the stray cattle are a grave problem in Bicholim. The authorities assured that the menace would be solved by the second week of October.
