CALANGUTE: Responding to complaints by the BSNL that the Electricity Department had damaged the main telephone line, while a road was being dug at Gaura Vaddo in Calangute, Assistant Engineer A K Chandran on Tuesday claimed that the Electricity Department had handed over the road work to a private contractor.
He, however, said that a junior engineer was at the site to supervise the digging work.
Chandran initially claimed that the was not involved in any digging work in Calangute to lay underground cables. “All such work was completed much before I could take charge of the Calangute. I do not think that the telephone lines were damaged due to digging work by the department,” he said.
But when reminded of specific digging work along the road near St Anthony’s Chapel at Gaura Vaddo leading to hotels in Tivai Vaddo, Chandran admitted to the digging work, but said it was privately done
 for a commercial establishment.
“The digging work along the road was done by a private party for commercial
establishment, but there were no reports of either telephone lines or PWD pipes being damaged. Our junior engineer, Panna D’Souza, was supervising the road works and I will verify the facts with him,” said Chandran.
