The Satya Niketan Paying Guest accommodation collapse in southwest Delhi has taken a grim turn as the death toll reached seven, prompting swift police action and structural policy directives across the capital. On Monday, a day after the multi-storey building collapsed, the absconding owner of the PG accommodation, identified as 81-year-old Hariram Gupta, was apprehended by law enforcement officials in Rajasthan.
The tragic incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Sunday in the congested neighborhood of Satya Niketan, located near Delhi University’s South Campus. The building was primarily occupied by male students from neighboring institutions, including Motilal Nehru College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College, and Sri Venkateswara College, hailing predominantly from states such as Kerala, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Rescue teams working through the night pulled 12 individuals from the mountain of concrete and twisted metal, confirming seven fatalities while providing urgent medical treatment to the surviving victims.

Multi-agency emergency efforts involving the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force, and Delhi Disaster Management Authority continued around the clock to clear the site. Officials reported that approximately 80 percent of the surface debris had been cleared by Monday afternoon, leaving primarily the basement area to be searched. Preliminary assessments indicate that water had accumulated extensively in the basement of the decades-old building. The structural integrity was further compromised by unapproved ongoing repair and renovation work in the basement, ultimately triggering the sudden collapse of all five floors.
In the wake of the disaster, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site to evaluate the rescue operation and announced immediate policy measures to prevent similar occurrences. Authorities have been ordered to identify and seal all five-storey buildings across Delhi pending safety audits. The Chief Minister declared that strict action will be taken against any Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials found guilty of regulatory oversights or negligence. A magisterial probe has been initiated, alongside formal legal proceedings against the property owner.
Additionally, local authorities evacuated adjacent residential units deemed structurally vulnerable. The standing building immediately neighboring the collapsed site has been declared unsafe and will be demolished once search and clearance operations are fully concluded. Central leadership, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Health Minister J P Nadda, is closely monitoring the situation as hospital authorities work to ensure optimal medical care for the injured students.
