LPG cylinder explodes, 1 hurt

MARGAO: A 54-year-old man sustained burn injuries when a LPG cylinder exploded while he was trying to extinguish a fire that engulfed a house and gutted two motorcycles at Orel-Assolna on Thursday morning.

Jose Cardinho was rushed to the Hospicio hospital with burn injuries, from where he was moved to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
The house belonging to Subhash Kerkar suffered major damages. The two motorcycles parked outside the house were completely gutted in the fire. Preliminary estimates prepared by the fire services have put the damage to the property at around Rs 4-5 lakh.
PSI Deu Mangaonkar informed that Jose Cardinho rushed to Kerkar’s house after he found the house and the motorcycles on fire. “While he was trying to put off the fire, the LPG cylinder stored in the house veranda suddenly exploded, leaving Jose with 25-30 per cent burn injuries on the face and other parts of the body,” PSI Deu said, while saying that the exact cause behind the fire is being ascertained.
Locals said that Jose along with other neighbours had responded to the cries for help when he was injured in the incident.
Fire Officer Gill De Souza told the media that the house suffered extensive damage, apart from the two motorcycles which were destroyed in the fire. “We are waiting for the owner to provide details of the loss of property. But, preliminary reports spoke of losses to the tune of Rs 4-5 lakh.
