PANJIM: Stating that the government is implementing measures to bring down the road accident rate, the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday blamed an increasing proportion of vehicles, rash and negligent and drunken driving for the rising number of accidents and its related fatalities in the State.
Addressing media persons post cabinet meeting, Sawant said that vehicle density in Goa compared to the rest of the country is very high. “We can see that compared to other States the proportion of vehicles per population is more in Goa,” he said.

“Also, many people don’t follow rules…drunken driving is another cause…people don’t check while overtaking the other vehicle…people need to act as responsible citizens and follow rules,” Sawant added.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to cooperate with the departments to reduce accidents.
“Traffic Cell, Transport Department and PWD are taking regular meetings to implement the measures to reduce the road accidents,” he said.
As per the Goa Police Traffic Cell data, this year, in the last one and half month, a total of 377 accidents have been reported with 38 deaths.
According to police, 3,011 road accidents were reported in 2022, out of which 253 were fatal wherein 271 succumbed to injuries. A total number of 181 persons on two-wheelers died in the accidents while 51 pedestrians lost their lives.
In 2021, 2,849 accidents were reported, out of which 218 were fatal. Almost 226 persons lost their lives.
