MARGAO: Frustrated vendors of Gandhi market on Tuesday warned the Margao Municipal Council of “maha morcha” if they fail to take strict action against all the illegal business activities by the roadside, as the vendors took morcha against the civic body, on Tuesday.

Nearly 60 to 80 vendors under leadership of Rajendra Azgaonkar marched into the cabin of MMC Chairperson Lyndon Pereira in the morning hours. Later, they even called on MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and demanded action against the illegalities in the market and surrounding areas.
Vendors questioned the heads of the civic body why no action was taken against the illegal business activities, mostly selling goods by the roadside.
They claimed that migrants selling goods, including fruits and vegetables, are affecting their business very badly. Vendors even questioned why no action was taken against the illegal gaddas operating in the jurisdiction of the civic body.
Later, the Chairperson called all the market inspectors wherein they justified that political pressure is the one of the main reasons for not initiating the action against the illegalities. However, the Chairperson and Chief Officer assured the vendors of actions from Wednesday onwards.
Speaking to the media persons, Azgaonkar said they want the civic body to take action against the illegal hawkers in and around Margao market, and also the gaddas. However, the Chairperson assured that the civic body will conduct a special drive against the illegal business activities.
