BAMBOLIM: Playing just his second season at FC Goa, Brandon Fernandes has managed to cement his position in Spanish gaffer Sergio Lobera’s star-studded midfield after starting most of the matches and is also one of the most loved Gaurs in the team.
Cool and composed with the ball, his unpredictable through balls and defence cracking chances for the strikers has made him one of the most sorted Indian talents in the Indian Super League and earned him quite a lot local backing..
“This is my second season at the club. Last season I played lot of matches and gained confidence. I know more about the club and their playing style and the whole atmosphere. This made it easier for me to have a better season,” stated Brandon Fernandes ahead of his final training session before the ATK.
Brandon first played in the ISL for Mumbai City in 2015, but his injury kept him out for major part of the season. The Goan lad then went on to play for Mohun Bagan in 2016 I-League season, but again, another injury forced him out of the season. The injuries were causing a major setback for the young talent’s growth, who was once identified to be India’s great in his age bracket.
“Injuries are downfall for any player and they can happen to anyone. So I think last season and this season I have kept myself fit and this has given me confidence to perform better and I’m very happy that I can play every match for FC Goa,” said Brandon, who has fought his way into becoming one of the finest Goan players.
I have support from my family and friends and when one is injured he has to recover well and comeback stronger. My physio has been very helpful to me.
But that doesn’t stop there, the youngster, who always preferred taking each step at time, now set the bar higher and is patiently awaiting the National call. “My next step is to get into the National team. Not only to get there but to stay there and perform even better for my country,” said the former ASD Football Academy player.
I want to keep playing as many matches as possible and keep scoring and assisting my teammates. I hope to get a chance and I want to play for the country,” he asserted.
Sergio’s playing style has earned appreciation from the Indian football fraternity and the Goan lad felt playing under the Spaniard helped him groom even more.
“Every coach is different. Sergio’s style of play –the possession play gives us lot of time with the ball that helps and gives us confidence to showcase our skills and capabilities. We are free to play our game,” he explained.
“Sergio likes to keep possession and score. Playing under Sergio has helped me a lot. Especially when I’m with the ball. I am more confident now, than I was before,” added Brandon.
“When I am on the field, I have to create chances for my teammates and score whenever needed. There is no specific role. It all depends on the situation. My main aim is to do well for the team and help them get good results.
Ahead of the final phase of the league, Brandon said they are looking to grab maximum points. “Next four games and we are looking for 12 points. We are concentrating to give our best and grab full points,” he concluded.
