Tired of waiting, Candolim locals repair village roads

Decision to repair roads taken at a recent gram sabha; villagers used concrete to fill potholes; the road from Candolim Primary Health Centre to Shantadurga Temple was the worst; many vehicles were damaged due to pot holes

As decided in a recent gram sabha, Candolim villagers, led by former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes, repaired the village’s dilapidated roads on Saturday. They used concrete to fill potholes and make the roads better for motorists.
Locals and tourists have been facing many difficulties while travelling on the roads in Candolim. The stretch from Candolim Primary Health Centre to Shantadurga Temple was the worst. It posed a threat to motorists’ lives, while their vehicles got damaged due to the dreaded pot holes.
“Despite reports in newspapers, the government failed to repair the roads of Candolim.  Hence, we had to take the initiative to do the same. At Calangute, they say the bad condition of the roads is because of JICA works, but what about Candolim? If the government does not repair the roads, we will do it. We will repair the roads of Calangute constituency, especially at Arpora and Parra as they have become death traps.” said Fernandes
When asked about the road-repair works in Candolim, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo stated, “The roads are in a bad state due to the ongoing works of a sewerage plant at Calangute.  At a few places in Candolim, the roads have been damaged due to water-logging near the speed breakers, which were recently put up as a safety precaution. All roads in Calangute constituency will be repaired by October end. However, the former Calangute MLA’s initiative is much welcomed if it serves the purpose.”
