MARGAO: There’s finally a ray of hope for beleaguered residents of government quarters, Pajifond.
Senior PWD officials on Thursday said that work on structural repairs and maintenance of the buildings at an estimated cost of Rs 45 lakh would commence soon with the agency issuing work order to the contractor.
That’s not all. PWD Executive Engineer Velingkar told District Collector N D Agrawal that work order has also been issued for covering of the building roof tops. He added that Principal Chief Engineer has already instructed the PWD to prepare detailed estimates of the entire Junta quarters complex at the earliest.
Velingkar made the statement when the District Collector along with Margao Municipal Ward Councillor Raju Naik inspected a couple of buildings which have shown signs of crumbling for want of repairs and maintenance.
The Ward Councillor briefed the District Collector about hardships faced by the Junta quarters residents, especially those putting up in B-type quarters and demanded action.
A resident, Soiru Komarpant briefed the District Collector on the safety and security of Junta quarters residents.
He said that outside elements use the facilities created for the residents and demanded action. He also brought to the notice of the Collector incidents of eve teasing by anti-social elements, who assemble on the road, creating a fear psychosis amongst the women folk.
The role of Margao police came in for sharp criticism for acting as mere spectators to complaints of eve teasing and anti-social activity on the main road.
“I have inspected the residential quarters following complaints of neglect for want of maintenance. The PWD has informed that they have already floated the tender. We expect the repair work to complete at the earliest,” he said.
On the anti-social activity, the Collector said he has asked the PWD to prepare estimate for the construction of a retaining wall to secure the government property. He further said that he would take care of the anti-social activity,
including eve teasing on
the road.
