Giving a new twist to the tale, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party today demanded CBI enquiry into the Home Minister Ravi Naik’s statement that some politicians were making allegations against him and son Roy Naik because they were not getting hafta.
The BJP all this while had been demanding federal inquiry into the police-drug nexus case, wherein the home minister’s son is allegedly involved.
After escaping the Opposition’s ire during most part of the monsoon session due to sickness, Home Minister Ravi Naik could not evade the BJP’s anger over police-politician-drug nexus, on the last day today.
The Opposition members not only stopped Naik from speaking in the House during “Zero Hour” but came down heavily on him over his statement to the media.
Addressing a press conference at Opposition Lobby in the Assembly complex during adjournment of the House, the Opposition said the home minister has cast aspersion on all politicians and hence there is a need for a CBI enquiry.
“We don’t want certificate from the home minister that his son is innocent. We want the CBI to certify that,” Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar said.
Mapusa MLA, Francis D’Souza said: “We demand a CBI enquiry to know politicians (who) were taking haftas. We will not allow him (Ravi) to speak unless our demand is met.”
“This is a serious allegation against the political community,” he said adding, “The home minister has committed contempt of the House.”
Parrikar said Naik should reveal names of the politicians who received hafta. Being the home minister he should have definite information on the politicians who received haftas, he added. “He has to justify the allegations made by him,” Parrikar said.
Taking strong objection to Naik’s conduct on Thursday, Parrikar said, he did not speak in the House — Chief Minister Digambar Kamat placed his demand and also replied — but he had enough energy not only to sit through the Session but also to address the press later in the evening.
Canacona MLA Vijay Pai Khot questioned as to “Why does the home minister not arrest people who are giving haftas?”
