MAPUSA: Riding on the strikes by U-20 Aman Govekar and Hussain Pinjar, Vasco Sports Club registered a 2-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Professional League match organised by GFA, at Duler Stadium here on Sunday.
With Sunday’s second win Vasco have eight points from their fifth league match, while Panjim Footballers who were playing almost after three weeks as their last match against Churchill Bros who are involved with the I-League was cancelled stay on three points from four league matches.
Vasco scored one goal in each half through U-20 Aman Govekar while U-20 Hussain Pinjar secured the full three points in the second session.
U-20 Aman Govekar scored the fastest goal by finding the net within 36 seconds on start of play for Vasco after capitalizing on a costly error by Panjim keeper Sherwin Da Cunha who let the ball slip out from his grasp off a dangerous cross from the right side by Shubham Malwankar.
Inacio Colaco nearly double the lead for Vasco but his long ranger in the 13th minute banged the crossbar and went out.
Panjim started the second half with more urgency and had two back-to-back chances of levelling the score but were denied by Vasco the defence who stood to their test and got the second goal in the 52nd minute.
Rugved Yeole’s teasing cross was well met by Hussain Pinjar who was brought in for by coach Micky Fernandes saw his well directed header find the back of the net to give a two goal cushion to Port Towners.
Panjim almost responded quickly from a free-kick but keeper Sanju Thapa brilliantly stopped Vallmiky Miranda’s fierce strike from entering the net.
Vasco keeper Thapa once again came to his side’s rescue in the 64th minute with an acrobatic save to deny Snedden Rodrigues who darted inside the box and struck a low grounder after capitalizing on a loose pass by skipper Lenstan who was outstanding in the defence.
Anil Gaonkar was unlucky not to find his name on the score sheet for Vasco when he had two chances in quick succession, first his placement missed the target by inches after some good work by substitute Moises and then minutes later his curling shot which was travelling goal wards was pushed out for a corner by Panjim defender Joyson D’Souza.
