Strange it may seem, but true. The office of the deputy collector, Margao had to issue two stop-work orders to the Colva police within a space of less than a week directing them to stop renovation work allegedly undertaken by a beach resort in Colva.
The lethargy of the Colva police had even taken the Collectorate officials by surprise and the officials are now planning to bring the lax attitude of the police to the notice of the police higher ups.
Sources in the know said the Deputy Collector, Margao had issued the first stop-work order notice around five days ago. The notice, however, was ignored with the police not initiating action and work at the resort continuing unabated.
Local NGOs, who had complained against the renovation work in violation of the CRZ regulations, again moved the deputy collector’s office for an immediate stop to the work.
Faced with the embarrassing situation, the deputy collector, sources said, issued another stop work order, but the NGOs have now complained to the CRZ authorities in Panjim that work still continues at the site.
When contacted, the Colva police claimed that police had indeed gone to the site after receiving stop work order, but have no knowledge whether work at the site had come to a stop or not.
In the meantime, the CRZ authorities in Panjim have sought a report from the deputy collector on the situation and the deputy collector is believed to have shifted the blame on the police for the delay in stopping the work.
