QUEPEM/MARGAO: Taking a firm stance against the transportation of waste from Sonsoddo to the solid waste management (SWM) facility at Cacora, the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) on Monday unanimously resolved to accept garbage from Quepem, Dharbandora, Sanguem and Canacona talukas at the facility.
During its special meeting, the council passed the resolution, which was supported by the local MLA and PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral.

The councillors unanimously agreed to the resolution to permit garbage from the above four talukas at the Cacora facility.
Speaking to media persons CCMC chairperson Pradeep Naik and Cabral said that during the meeting, the council decided to file an intervention application in the High Court against the directive allowing the transportation of waste from Sonsoddo to the SWM facility at Cacora.
Cabral said, “I stand by the Curchorem-Cacora municipal Council’s decision to file an intervention application in the court. We don’t agree with the High Court directive allowing transportation of waste from Sonsoddo to the Cacora facility. The SWM facility was started keeping in mind these four talukas and we had a public hearing on this.”
Councillor Balkrishna Hodarkar said that all councillors have unanimously agreed to the Council’s move to file an intervention application in the High Court.
Meanwhile, the transportation of wet waste from Margao to Cacora SWM facility continued on Monday.
Margao Municipal Council officials said that they had transported two truckloads of wet waste to the facility with the Goa Waste Management Corporation arranging the vehicles.
It is pertinent to note that recently the High Court had issued directions to Goa Waste Management Corporation to transport 20 MT wet waste to Cacora, upon which authorities and the civic body had initiated the process.
“On Monday, we transported nearly two trucks of garbage to the Cacora facility. We are following the directions of the court,” said MMC officials.
The officials said that on account of no transport facility, they had problems transporting the waste. However, later Goa Waste Management Corporation engaged two trucks for the transportation.
MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar said that they have taken note of the protest by the residents of Curchorem pertaining to transportation of waste from Margao to Cacora.
Waste is being transported to Cacora besides Saligao waste treatment plant on the directions of the court, he added.
