CANACONA: The dilapidated government quarters at the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) and Canacona Police Station are waiting to be demolished.
These buildings have been abandoned for years as it is unsafe. Immediately after the State assembly results, Canacona MLA and Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes Fernandes took stock of the precarious state of the govt quarters near CHC and intimated the department concerned to demolish the structures.
In his letter to the Disaster Management Authority (DMA) and Health Minister, Fernandes pointed out that six of the eight blocks of the quarters were in bad condition and that it needs immediate removal to ensure the safety of the occupants of the other blocks including small children.
Being rendered unusable, the blocks are now surrounded with creepers and other vegetation, which has become a safe haven for rodents and wild snakes both venomous and otherwise. The position is no different for the police quarters beside the police station.
When asked to comment on the status, Fernandes said, “I am regularly following up my on letter and hopefully there should be new quarters in place of the old ones.”
