VASCO: Thirty nine migrant workers staying at Verna who decided to walk to their native place in Uttar Pradesh were stopped at Patradevi checkpost by Goa Police on Saturday and were brought back to Verna Police Station.

Sources from the Verna Police Station informed that around 39 migrant workers who were earlier employed in the companies at Verna Industrial Estate, recently decided to just walk to their native place in Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday, they were stopped by the police at Patradevi check post and were sent back to Verna Police Station.
They mentioned that these workers were later taken to Margao Hospicio, Asilo Hospital to do the general medical check up and since Saturday night they were camping outside Verna Police Station.
Further, these migrant workers were provided food by group of activists from Vasco. The workers voluntarily decided to clean the surrounding of the police station till the time they were at the Verna Police Station.
One of the workers named Devraj Singh who has been living in Goa since last eight years said that he was working in a beverage industry as a salesman. Due to COVID-19 lockdown many like him lost their livelihood and they were left with no option than to go to their native place.
“Nobody is willing to give us job, food, shelter, we have no money. We are being treated badly therefore we took this step,” Singh added.
Later, an activist from Vasco Avinash Tiwari said that he along with his other friends after learning about the plight of the migrant workers rushed at Verna Police Station and gave them food.
“I will see that these workers are registered. I also demand to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to send one train to Goa so that North Indians who wants to go back to native place can go via train.”
He also thanked Verna Police for taking the migrant workers for medical check up and shifting them to shelter home at Vasco.
