MARGAO: Their labourers had reported at the fishing jetty right on time, but fishing vessels operating from the Cutbona fishing jetty could not venture out on Day One of the fishing season for the same old problem – hostile navigation at the River Sal mouth at Betul.
Many a fishing boat set sail from the fishing jetty, but had to return back after taking into account the adverse condition at the river mouth.
If President of Cutbona Boat Owners Union Seby Cardozo is to be believed, huge waves battered the river mouth on Thursday, totally ruling out the possibility of venturing out.
“Our vessels could have ventured out in the sea like our Vasco counterparts, but the river mouth came in the way”, he said.
Cardozo pointed out that the sand bar will pose huge problems for the navigation this time round, adding that it would be impossible to venture out nor return back from the sea during low tide.
“We have been knocking the doors of successive governments over the years to ensure a smooth navigation channel at the River Sal mouth, but in vain. A Malpei like harbour at the river mouth would help tackle the perennial problem,” he said.
Replying to a question, Cardozo said that whether the fishing vessels would venture out in the sea on Friday or not would greatly depend on the conditions at the River Sal mouth and the weather conditions in the sea.
