Sarpanchas of Benaulim constituency, fishermen put up united front

MARGAO: In a first of its kind show of strength, the Sarpanchas of all seven villages of Benaulim constituencies came together to announce their support to the Save Mhadei movement and appealed to the villagers and public to attend the public meeting to be held in Sanquelim on Monday.

Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, addressed the media in the presence of the seven Sarpanchas.

 “Come in large numbers to the public meeting on Monday, January 16 at 4 pm at Virdi-Ammona bridge, Sanquelim,” Viegas told Banalkars

He added that it is important that everyone comes together on one platform and keep whatever political differences they may have aside.

The Sarpanchas also explained why saving the Mhadei river is important and how any proposed diversion of the river will have catastrophic consequences for the State of Goa.

Later, the fishing community of Benaulim constituency along with the MLA also made a similar appeal about Mhadei. Here the fishermen elaborated on the importance of the rivers not only as a source of their livelihood but for how important it is to Goa’s environment and coastal communities.
