Chopdem Panchayat turns Nelson’s Eye to destruction of mangroves

PERNEM:  Locals from Morjim have raised their voice against the illegal land filling and cutting down of mangroves along a riverside property near the Chopdem bridge.

Social activist Sanjay Kole alleged that while the illegality has been taking place under the very nose of the authorities, the stoic silence maintained by the panchayat questionable.

“Mangroves are destroyed by dumping mud, illegal construction is being carried out and the authorities see nothing. The local panchayat is least bothered about the illegalities, mud has been dumped at the sluice gate and those who raise their voices are threatened,” Kole said.

He accused a non Goan businessman of damaging the environment and alleged that the high and mighty have scant regard for the law.

On Monday, a earth moving machinery was found clearing the land near the Chopdem bridge and leveling the land with mud further destroying the mangroves.
