Chorao-Britona bridge opposed at Salvador do Mundo gram sabha

PORVORIM: The proposal to construct a bridge of Chorao-Britona met with stiff opposition from locals at the Salvador do Mundo gram sabha on Sunday, March 5. The special gram sabha was called for by the villagers to discuss the bridge issue.

Locals opined that the stress on the narrow roads would increase if the bridge is constructed. They feared that under the garb of road widening, the authorities would demolish the houses of locals.

“The compound walls, houses will have to be demolished if the roads were widened. Given the history when it came to land acquisition, the government will not compensate us for the losses,” said one of the locals.

The meeting was attended by Sarpanch Roshni Savaikar, Secretary Amit Prabhu and other panch members.

Locals also demanded for speed bumps and sign boards to be installed at Dhanwada. Some suggested for the Chapel bus stop to be declared as a no parking zone and the violators to be penalised by the police. The villagers have also expressed annoyance over those who drink out in the open and create a ruckus and demanded that the police book them. The villagers demanded a push to the pending development works in the panchayat.
