MARGAO: A native of Tamil Nadu is cooling his heels in the Margao 
police lock up after he was accused for desecrating a religious 
cross at Pajifond near the old electricity office late last Friday 
night.
The accused Sellutemar Kumar (33) has been booked for hurting and 
insulting religious sentiments by allegedly throwing food items 
and stones on the cross.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 11.45 pm when 
the accused was found throwing food items on the cross, which is 
venerated by all sections of the society, especially those putting 
up at the government Junta quarters. The Margao police who were 
intimated of the incident immediately rushed to the spot and took 
the man into custody.
Margao Municipal Ward Councillor Raju Naik engaged municipal 
labourers to clean up the cross on Saturday morning. The 
councillor condemned the incident and demanded an inquiry. “The 
cross is being venerated by people from all walks of life. People 
from all communities take part in the annual litany at the cross 
in the month of December”, Raju said.
