PANJIM: A 15-year-old girl, suffering from failure of both her kidneys is hoping to get a new lease of life after she approached Health Minister Vishwajit Rane for medical help. The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) has swung into action exploring all possibilities to help the minor girl.
GMC – the only recognized kidney transplant facility provider in the State- having done only 14 transplants in last five years and not a single surgery being performed in last six months.
Rane who was on his surprise visit to Goa Medical College and Hospital on Thursday was approached by the girl, who belongs to a poor family and currently taking dialysis in the hospital.
When contacted, the minister said that a little girl approached him seeking medical help, when he was on a visit to GMC. “She came to know that Minister is in hospital and accordingly she came and met me. She is suffering from both kidney failures,” Rane said.
Rane said that he has instructed the GMC doctors and staffers to do all possible things to help the girl. “I was touched when she asked me what I can do to save her life. As a health minister and human being, I am duty bound to do anything possible to get her back into proper health. We will try our best to give her a new life,” he said.
The State run hospital has decided to provide all the facilities to the girl.
The minister has asked GMCH to check the possibility whether kidney of any of her parent can be used for transplant. “Both the parents have agreed to donate their kidney to save the life of their daughter,” he said.
The girl was on Friday shown to the specialist and the process has begun to cross match the blood group of her parents to explore the possibility of kidney transplant. On the same day, the blood sample of her mother was tested, while on Saturday, the doctors conducted examination of her father’s blood samples.
With kidney transplant unit being non functional for past six months, the Minister has also decided to hold series of meeting to regulate the facilities in the kidney unit.
