VASCO: Following a complaint by the member of Animal Welfare Board that some persons have been selling beef at Pirni market without authorisation, the Verna police on Sunday arrested two Betalbatim residents under various sections of law.
According to Police, a complaint was lodged by one Anjali Anand, Animal welfare officer attached to Animal Welfare Board, New Delhi that at around 8.30 am she noticed that beef is being sold in the Pirni market.
“As per the complainant when she questioned the sellers about the source of the beef, the accused sellers were unable to give satisfactory answers. She therefore filed a complaint before Verna police and acting on the complaint, a police team rushed to the site and seized 150 kgs of beef from the accused persons. We have registered an FIR against both the accused persons under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Goa Daman and Diu Cow Slaughter Act, Goa Animal Preservation Act, 1995, 1998 read with Section 34 and Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is in progress,” Verna PI Ninad Deulkar said.
