MAPUSA: The Oxel gram sabha on Sunday deliberated on the issue of increasing number of Nigerian nationals residing in the village and the garbage menace.
The gram sabha resolved to write to local police station to seek details of tenants, who have submitted their details through C Form and to request the police to reject C Forms of Nigerian nationals who apply for residing in the village.
The resolution was passed after the locals raised the issue of increase in number of Nigerians in the village. The gram sabha members claimed that there is gang of Nigerian nationals, that operates near the village junction late night and the presence of such anti-socials is unsafe for the people especially women, who travel home after work especially at night.
The locals said the C Forms are submitted to the police station however the local panchayat has no details of these people. The locals demanded that like the police, the panchayat should also keep details of people renting out their rooms to Nigerians.
Locals also highlighted that even construction workers reside in rented room however the details of such workers are not with panchayat.
The panchayat decided to maintain three registers namely for non-Goans, Goans and foreign nationals residing in rented rooms.
The people informed the panchayat that several landlords have rented out 10 to 15 rooms but the owner only pays tax of only one room and claimed that these rooms have no sanitation facilities.
Locals informed that since these rooms have no toilet facilities there is open defecation in the area.
Responding to this, sarpanch informed that panchayat will seek details of the same and take necessary action.
The sarpanch urged the people to collect the dry garbage in bags and not to dump the same in open spaces.
The locals suggested the panchayat body to organise a garbage awareness programme.
