PANJIM: The State Fisheries Department has discontinued the Central government’s ambitious Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) — an accident insurance scheme offering accidental death and disability cover — for the fishermen for the current financial year.
In a notification issued, Director Fisheries Shamila Monteiro said that the government has accorded its approval to discontinue the PMBSY scheme, notified in July 2018, from the current financial year.
The scheme had aimed at covering the uncovered population at a highly affordable premium of just Rs12 per year. The scheme was available for the people in the age group of 18 to 70 years. Under the said scheme, risk coverage available was Rs 2 lakh for accidental death and permanent total disability and Rs 1 lakh for permanent partial disability.
