PANJIM: The Goa Traffic Police in a special drive collected nearly Rs 56 lakh as a fine for various traffic violations in the State. The total fine collected is Rs 55,96,000.

The Goa Traffic Police had launched a special drive from September 14 to 25, to instill a sense of discipline amongst the drivers and riders due to rising cases of motor vehicle accidents including fatal. During the special drive, the Traffic Police have prosecuted large number of motorists for various violations.
“The drive will be also taken up on the local roads to bring in traffic disciple,” stated the Traffic Police.
The Traffic Police, for over speeding under violation of Motor Vehicle Act, booked 701 cases and collected a fine of Rs 7,05,000. For riding without helmet, total cases booked were 2,271 with fine of Rs 22,71,000 collected. The punishment for this violation is fine of Rs 1,000 and MDL of the violator to be suspended for a minimum period of three months. Similarly, driving without seatbelt, total 676 cases were booked and Rs 6,76,000 fine collected. Fine for violation under this rule is Rs1,000.
A total 3,871 cases were booked for dangerous parking/no parking and fine collected is Rs 19,44,000. The punishment for this rule violation is Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,500 for second or subsequent offence. For light motor vehicle, the punishment for violation is Rs1,000 and Rs 2,000 for other vehicles. The MDL of the violator can be suspended for a minimum pe– riod of three months. Similarly, for drunken driving violation, 101 cases were booked. The punishment for this violation is imprisonment which may extend to six months and fine which may extend to Rs 10,000 and the MDL of the violator can be suspended for a minimum period of three months.
The Goa Traffic Police have appealed to all road users — drivers and riders particularly the young to drive/ride safely and responsibly and obey all the traffic rules.
