MARGAO: Gold worth around Rs 10 lakh that was reported missing from the locker of the Madgaum Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd’s Aquem branch on December 24 morning was mysteriously found in an adjacent locker on December 27.
According to Margao Town Police Inspector Kapil Nayak, following the uproar over the missing gold, the bank staff started searching all the lockers at the bank and even checked the lockers that are not occupied or remaining with the bank.
In one such empty locker that was just next to the locker occupied by the de Souza family, whose gold was reported missing, the missing gold was found and the family has even given an undertaking that they have received all the gold that was kept in the bank locker.
It may be recalled that on December 24, Eden de Souza had gone to the bank to remove the gold from the locker as it was festive season and was surprised and shocked to find the gold missing. As per the complaint lodged with the police, Eden’s mother had last opened to the locker on August 20, 2018.
Kapil disclosed that the bank also took up the matter very seriously as the police had begun questioning bank officials. While the manager was summoned to the police station on December 24 itself, other officials were called subsequently.
He was of the opinion that the aged mother may have mistakenly placed the gold in the adjacent locker and after locking her locker left the bank without realizing her mistake.
