MARGAO: Konkan Railway Police in 2023 recovered stolen property of passengers worth Rs 2,76,75,000 after arresting the alleged accused.
Police stated that they detected 17 of the 32 thefts reported in running trains in 2023. Cash, gold ornaments, mobiles and other valuables worth Rs 4,81,03,822 were stolen in these cases, of which police succeeded in recovering stolen property worth Rs 2,76,75,000.

“We have recovered almost fifty percent of the stolen property and cases have been charged against the arrested accused,” said an officer of the Konkan Railway Police.
For instance, on May 2, 2023, an offence was registered under Section 379 read with Section 34 of IPC, in which a passenger travelling from Panvel to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with a consignment of gold ornaments weighing 7,021.9300 grams worth Rs 4,12,25,751, kept in a grey trolley bag which was chained was stolen.
Police arrested Sandeep Bhosale from Maharashtra, Akshay Chinwal from Khanapur, Archana More from Navi Mumbai, Dhanpat Hansraj Baid from Mumbai, Santosh S Shirtode from Karnataka, Atul Kamble from Sangli Maharashtra, Mahendra Mane from Maharashtra and Mohsin Jamadaar from Sagli and part of the stolen property worth Rs 2,00,00,000 was recovered.
Further on August 7, 2023, an offence was registered upon the complaint of a lady passenger travelling by Netravati Express stating that when the train reached Margao, some unknown person stole her hand bag containing gold ornaments and other items, all worth approximately Rs 7,59,000.
Following investigations, Nasim alias Salim Khan from Jharkhand was arrested and police recovered all the stolen gold ornaments and mobile phone in the investigations conducted by PI Sunil Gudlar.
The Konkan Railway Police registered another major offence on August 8, 2023 following a complaint filed by a passenger that while he was travelling with his family, thieves stole two hand bags containing gold ornaments and other valuables including mobiles and documents all worth around Rs 4,70,000 at the Pernem railway station.
Police arrested three persons namely Ramishwar Kumar Nandlal Sahani from Ratnagiri, Khublal Kailas Mahto and Vinod Sonaram Mahato, both from Jharkhand and part of the stolen was recovered from them.
Police revealed that in 2020, they detected five of the ten theft cases registered and property worth Rs 2,84,130 was recovered. Property worth Rs 10,29,030 was stolen that year.
In 2021, altogether 42 thefts were reported and 13 of them were detected. Goods worth Rs 39,51,988 was stolen of which property worth Rs 5,88,200 was recovered. In 2022, total 23 thefts were reported and 7 were detected. Property worth Rs 55,97,198 was stolen of which property worth Rs 8,15,000 was recovered.
