PANJIM: The State Forest Department has called for suggestions and objections from stakeholders on the draft notification declaring eco-sensitive areas in the Western Ghats section of the State. The objections should reach the Union government by May 17.
The notification also pertains to areas in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and was issued under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986.
This notification was published in the Gazette dated March 10.
The Union ministry had called for objections and suggestions on the notification that marks out the eco-sensitive zones in the Western Ghats. These are to be submitted to the union secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests within 60 days from March 18.
The feedback from the stakeholders pertains to the proposed buffer zones to the sanctuaries in the State.
The State’s Mining Industry is interlinked with the forests and especially in and around buffer zones.
