I
feel superstitions are related to a state being powerless or fear. When we
cannot really explain why certain things happen, we try to create a pattern to
provide us something to believe in. Personally, I don’t believe in
superstitions at all and I think it is all just a coincidence. I remember when
I was younger, elders would say not to cut your nails in the night as something
bad would happen but over the years I have grown to believe that this belief
might have started really way back in time when there were no proper tools and
bulbs hence if you tried then in the night you would have just ended up cutting
your fingers or toes. Hence we might need a paradigm shift to get over
superstitions.

Friday
the 13th is like a horror movie, which might come to life for a lot of people I
know. The funny part is that it’s only in their head, and if one day dedicated
to such a superstition can make a scriptwriter out of a person, many such days
could make our country a creative powerhouse. Actually, Friday the 13th is not
as scary as the many other days of the year, most of the days where we hear
about horrifying things that people are doing to other people. That should
scare us more than such superstitious days.

Personally,
I feel the concept of ‘Friday The 13th’ is just a gimmick to make life
interesting. People crave drama to entertain their redundant lives sometimes.
Nothing significant has ever happened to me or anyone I know on that day yet.
However, there always will be some clever influential people who cash out on
vulnerable people who are scared of living. It’s more of a western superstition
which has rubbed off on our Indian culture in recent times.

I was born on the 13th but I am not superstitious. In fact, I make the most of
it even if it falls on a Friday. Growing up I heard a lot about Friday the 13th
and people being superstitious but I never really felt like that. I enjoyed and
had Halloween and gothic themed parties and even if it isn’t my birthday we end
up celebrating or going out for dinner. One needs to believe in themselves and
not in these superstitious things.

the 13th has always had the stigma of bad luck attached and quite frankly
although I wouldn’t possibly have anything auspicious on that day; I don’t
think it interferes with my ordinary day. Although being in the field of
marketing, I agree it makes for popular horror themes because of the movie and
the stories attached to it, like even these fantasy ‘escape rooms’ having games
such as Ward no.13! I think on some level I would choose to listen to the aged
old stories and probably just steer away for that number 13 altogether! Also ,
I have a friend whose birthday is on Friday the 13th and it’s interesting to
see how people celebrate their birthday on this day.
