The hoteliers under the banner of South Goa Hotel & Restaurant Owners Association has also questioned the classification of the hotels proposed by the council, saying the classification is without any basis as the council ought to have considered the quantum of garbage generated as a factor for classification.
They also raised the question of fast food gaddas operating in the city without paying any tax, including the sales tax and other taxes imposed by the government. The hoteliers pointed out that besides fast food gaddas, tea vendors, who supply tea door-to-door in offices, shops etc, and small caterers, who supply homemade food eat into their businesses.
A delegation of the Association led by president C P Jaggi called on MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant on Thursday and submitted a memorandum calling for a review of the hotel garbage collection fees.
Jaggi later told the media that the Association has urged the civic body to reconsider the steep hike in the fees. He also demanded to know whether the civic body has levied any such fees on the hand carts selling fast food. “The MMC has proposed to increase the garbage collection fees 3-4 times, which are exorbitant and unacceptable. We also want the civic body to collect the fees on a daily basis.
MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant said the civic body would place the request of the hoteliers before the council for an appropriate decision.
