PANJIM: Twenty five percent of all major operations at the Goa Dental College and Hospital, Bambolim, are on cancer patients, while 50 percent are on accident victims, doctors said Thursday. In the accident category, majority of the victims are of traffic accidents and also include victims of falls and fights.
Speaking to media Dr Vikas Dhupar, Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, also said that the new state-of-the-art Dental College Hospital building would be ready within a year and this would reduce time spent by patients waiting for their turn.
At present the hospital treats at least 25,000 patients a year. Out of these, the hospital conducts about 300 major surgeries per year – 50 percent of which are on accident victims, 25 percent are cancer patients and there are at least 150 patients that come to the OPD on any given day. The new hospital complex which is under construction in the dental college complex itself will have two operation theatres and a 50-bedded waiting area.
“It will be the best in the area and once the new hospital is commissioned, the number of chairs too will increase. The waiting period for patients will also decrease,” Dr Dhupar said.
Addressing a press conference to announce a conference of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India, Dr Dhupar said that they are also
looking to enhance the experience of the dental students in the State.
“We have signed MOUs with other colleges. Now we are looking to sign MOUs with some colleges abroad,” he said, but admitted that they had to meet their standards before anything else.
He said the main aim of the press conference was to create awareness among people
in Goa that there is a field known as oral and maxillofacial surgery.
