FRRO Mumbai to accept OCI applications
PANJIM: As the state has been unable to accept Overseas Citizens of India applications due to lack of infrastructure, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the FRRO Mumbai to accept and process all OCI applications from the applicants coming under the FRRO Goa so as to avoid inconvenience to applicants, Director of NRI Affairs U D Kamat said.

The state’s Bureau of Immigration has not been able to implement the OCI Scheme in Goa from April 1, 2013 due to lack of office premises, basic infrastructure and trained manpower.
The Government of India had delegated powers to FRRO Goa for granting / issuing OCI card status to eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin residing within Goa.
Auditions of Nrutya Saavishkaar-3
PANJIM: The re-auditions of Nrutya Saavishkaar – season 3 will be held on May 12, from 10am to 1pm at Shree Bhumika Devasthan Sabhagruha, Wadwad-Curca.
Nrutya Saavishkaar is an all Goa solo dance competition organized by Bhumika Youth Association in collaboration with Kala Academy. Restricted water supply
PANJIM: There will be restricted water supply on May 11 and 12 to areas of Mormugao and Salcete taluka due to power shutdown at Salaulim Treatment Plant by Electricity department for pre-monsoon maintenance works.

Support group meeting at Margao
PANJIM: Positive People Goa, an NGO working for people living and affected by HIV in Goa held its monthly support Group meeting at Margao on May 4,which was attended by seventy persons along with children. Mr Amey Hegde, a corporate trainer and motivational speaker conducted a session on ‘Attitude of Gratitude,’ which consisted of video presentation and interaction with the audience. Mr Amey urged the HIV affected persons not to worry too much for the things that they have lost/missed in their life, but instead, to be grateful for the bountiful blessings they enjoy each day.
Seminar on Portuguese literature

Free cataract surgeries
PANJIM: Kanchi Kamakotti Peetam Charitable Trust, Goa, SMRC’s V M Salgaocar Hospital, Chicalim and V M Salgaocar & Bro Pvt Ltd in association with Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, will conduct free eye cataract surgery on May 11 and 12.
The surgery is being organized for the poor and needy patients from Chicalim, Bogmalo and Sancoale Panchayats.
It will conclude on May 13, the birth anniversary of late V M Salgaocar, founder chairman of SMRC. Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar will be the chief guest on May 13 at the concluding function of the free eye cataract surgery. About 100 patients will be operated free of cost.
Cases of cataract will be operated upon by specialists from Sankara Eye Hospital by a small incision sutureless operation with implantation of Intra-ocular-lens.
Vigil on girls in parlours
PANAJI: District Magistrate, South Goa District, Margao has ordered all the beauty parlours that when girls from outside the State are employed or engaged for the beauty parlour work, before making the appointment, the details of the girls such as their name, age, address of the native place and place from where they have presently come along with their photograph and a valid identity proof should be furnished to the nearest Police Station.
Any person contravening this order shall be punishable under Section 188 of IPC.
All the Police officers of the rank of Police Inspector and above are hereby authorized to file FIR on behalf of the State, if any person is found contravening the above order.
Steps over criminals’ movement
PANAJI: District Magistrate, South Goa district Margao has ordered that no landlords/tenants/owner/person of any house/property in the jurisdiction of South Goa, shall let/sublet/rent out any accommodation to any person unless and until or he/she has furnished the particulars of the tenants to the Police In-Charge of the concerned area. Similarly all the persons who intend to take accommodation on rent or otherwise also shall inform in writing in this regard to the In-charge of Police Station of the area. Any person dealing in property shall also inform in writing to the Police Station-In-charge of the nearest Police Station about the particulars of other tenants/purchasers.
Any person contravening this order shall be punishable under Section 188 of the IPC.

Wiseman to chair conference in France
PANJIM: Dr R G Wiseman Pinto, Professor and Head of Pathology Department, GMC and Past President of Indian Academy of Cytologists and member of the Education Committee, Membership Committee of the International Academy of Cytology has been invited as a Faculty and Chairperson at the International Conference of Cytology, organised by the International Academy of Cytology and the French Society of Clinical Cytology, to be held at Palais des Congres in Paris, France, between May 26 to 30. Dr Wiseman will also deliver a lecture and Chair the session on Advances in Cytopathology in the subcontinent.
The other faculty in this session will be professors and heads of Pathology Departments from PGIMER Chandigarh, AIIMS New Delhi, Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai, KMC Manipal and KMC Mangalore.
Dr Pinto will also chair the session on Scientific Research Papers on Cytology diagnosis along with Dr Christian Garbar, Consultant Pathologist, Cedex, Paris, France, where Research papers on Liquid Based Cytology, Synovial Cytology, Central Nervous System Cytology, CSF Cytology, Lymphoma and Ebstein Barr Virus will be presented and discussed. Dr Pinto will also present three more Scientific research papers.
Karnataka native falls to death
MARGAO: Hussain Chapparavan, a 26-year-old native of Karnataka died in a fall from a building under construction at Ambaji-Fatorda while his relative Saddam Chapparavan (25) suffered grievous injuries and was admitted to Hospicio. The incident occurred on Thursday while the duo was working on a parapet of a window on the fourth floor, which gave away and both fell. Margao PI Sudesh Naik who visited the site said that prima facie it appears to be negligence by the builder. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and further investigations are on.
‘Kidnapped’ businessman arrested
MARGAO: Margao PI Sudesh Naik informed that on May 9, at 3.30 pm, the police received a call from Sapna Kharapurkar that her husband Ballu alias Dinesh Kharapurkar, a coal businessman, had been kidnapped near Apollo Hospital, Malbhat-Margao.
The caller informed that the kidnappers came in two vehicles ~ KA-31-M-6401 and KA-31-M-7069. PI Naik immediately conducted a search and verified that Ballu had been arrested by Sirsi Circle police team headed by PI Nagesh Shetye for purchasing gold worth Rs 7 lakh, which was robbed by Firoz who was also arrested by the Karnataka police.
Police sources informed that accused Firoz, a native of Karnataka and residing at Balli, who worked as driver with Ballu, was reported missing. Incidentally, Ballu had filed a missing complaint with Quepem police. After Ballu’s arrest, Firoz who was wanted in robbery case, was also arrested by the Karnataka police who after interrogating him came in search of Ballu with a warrant and arrested him.
Clash accused denied anticipatory bail
MARGAO: The South Goa Sessions Court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail application moved by accused ~ Akshay Naik, Tyson Pruvedancial and Amar Khulal against whom Margao police had registered an offence under Sections 143, 147, 148, 324 and 427 of the IPC over a group clash on May 4, at Nil Kamal Bar, Margao. Akshay and Tyson who surrendered to Margao police on Thursday evening, have been arrested.
One booked under PDPP Act
MARGAO: Colva Police on a complaint from J R Gracias, Assistant Manager, Tourism Department, Panjim have registered an offence under section 3 of PDPP Act against Prakash Naik who owned a shop at Tourist Complex, Colva.
In his complaint, he alleged that Naik damaged the shop at tourist complex by digging a pit inside the verandah presumed to be for a soak pit and also removed a window of the shop.
The total damage is estimated to be Rs 80,000. Further investigation is in progress by Colva police.
One held for stabbing hotel owner
PANJIM: One person has been arrested in connection with the assault on owner of Manik Hotel, one Vithal Chopdekar, police said. A complaint had been filed by Suresh Dasharath Narvekar that on 8 May, at 8.25 pm, one Naveen Sreenivasan from St Inez, Panjim, stabbed Vithal Chopdekar owner of Manik Snacks hotel, at hotel premises, near Geeta Bakery, Panjim.
Chopdekar, a resident of Chimbel, was stabbed in the stomach after a quarrel between accused and the owner over a soft drink. Chopdekar was shifted to GMC Bambolim. The case was registered under Section 307 IPC.
Sale of Kingfisher beer to continue
PANJIM: There is good news brewing for the ‘king of good times’ as the scheduled blacklisting of selling Kingfisher beer seems to be put on the backburner.
“After positive assurances from Praveen Kerkar, distributor of Kingfisher beer in Goa to resolve our issue of empty bottles,” the Goa Liquor Traders Association (GLTA) representative told media Thursday. According to the GLTA, it has been decided to continue selling Kingfisher 650ml and 330ml bottles till further notice.
Fair: Activists knock Collector’s doors
MARGAO: City-based activists have knocked the doors of the district Collector, South seeking his intervention to shift the Holy Spirit Church feast fair from Old Market’s footpaths and roads to SGPDA market complex.
The United Goans Welfare Front has asked Collector N D Agrawal to call a joint meeting with all concerned parties and ensure that the fair is shifted to the SGPDA grounds and give a relief to the general public. The Front pointed out that the commercial business activities are being promoted in the name of Holy Spirit feast by some vested interests in the Margao Municipal Council. Activist Laurel Abranches feared that stalls will be permitted around the Colva Circle and along the Ravindra Bhavan road on the occasion of the Church feast (May 19) this year.Last year too, the activists had made a determined bid to stop the fair at the Old Market Circle, but the civic body went ahead with the permissions, creating traffic chaos on the busy road.
