MAPUSA: On September 12 afternoon a major water pipeline near the petrol pump at Duler, Mapusa was damaged resulting in the wastage of thousands of litres of water. The water accumulated on the road causing severe traffic jams and inconvenience to the commuters throughout that day. Although the pipe was fixed for an entire month leakage was spotted. This 700 mm pipeline supplying water to the seven constituencies of Bardez from the Assonora Water Treatment plant has been finally permanently fixed on Thursday late night. The PWD carried out works during an entire day and got the pipeline fixed. The Assistant Engineer, PWD (water) Dipak Borkar had assured that the repair works of this pipeline will begin on Thursday morning and will be completed on the same day. On Thursday there was restricted water supply to the consumers of Mapusa, Porvorim, Anjuna, Marna, Siolim and parts of Calangute and Porvorim. Water supply was stopped to these areas and they were asked to take the necessary measures and store water for the day. A local and social activist, Shekhar Naik told Herald that a lot of inconvenience was caused over the last one month as the water was still seeping out despite the repair. “Till Thursday evening the repair work was being carried out in full swing. We are happy that they have taken up this work on priority basis after a lot of intervention,” told Naik. While the PWD Executive Engineer, V.M Chavan told that after the pipe was ruptured a month ago there was leakage spotted despite the repair done. “We could not fix it permanently as we needed to stop the water supply. We did not want to carry out the works during Ganesh Chaturhi. Now we are in the process of fabricating some MS Bend and by Thursday late night the work will be completed,” told Chavan.
